Joppa Fine Foods is reminiscent of the days of the neighborhood corner store, owned and operated by a member of the community. We are a small, brick and mortar shop dedicated to sustaining a personal connection to food. We offer an extensive selection of cheeses, cured meats, wines, craft beers and hard-to-find pantry items. Every day our chefs prepare panini sandwiches, fresh salads, scones, entrees and side dishes from scratch, using fresh, local ingredients.
Joppa offers products that are hand picked by owner Abbie Batchelder and the Joppa team. All of the goods we carry are sourced from small makers who take pride in their work, and we are proud to offer their unique products. It is our goal to make your experience fun, interactive, personal and educational. Whether you are cooking for your family, entertaining for friends or just need a quick meal, Joppa Fine Foods has the epicurean essentials you need to enrich and enliven every eating experience, large or small.
Abbie Batchelder, Owner
Abbie Batchelder is Newburyport born and raised. Her career in fine food started when she was hired as the General Manager at Joppa the day before the store opened in September of 2003. When approached four years later with the offer to buy the store, Abbie took on the challenge with excitement and dove in headfirst. Her experience in fine food and wine is measured in decades and she has carefully selected each and every item on the shelf. She has sought out products she loves, produced in small batches by like-minded people. The selection at Joppa is the result of thousands of miles traveled and many years spent eating, drinking and tasting, finding the very best products to bring the world of food to one place. The only thing that rivals Abbie’s love for good food and wine is the love she has for her loyal dog Niki.
We are a team of foragers, students, mothers and artisan producers. We are backyard gardeners, professional chefs, home cooks and food crafters. We are educators and life long learners. Our lives and backgrounds are varied, but our interests unite us in a passion for food and farming. We take time to train ourselves to be knowledgeable about the products we make and sell. We want to know all we can about our food and we expect that our customers do too.
Barbara Vye, Chef
Barbara Vye grew up eating the Azorean/French home-style cooking of her large extended family. Barb’s knack can be attributed to her early experience with farm-fresh food, seafood and pork, brought to life with traditional Mediterranean ingredients of olive oil, garlic, parsley and spices such as piri-piri, cinnamon, vanilla and saffron. Barb likes to test new ingredients and flavors on her husband and her three sons.
